Kindergarten students explored the artwork of Piet Mondrian. There is lots to learn by looking at a simple Mondrian painting. For example, Mondrian only used the 3 primary colors in his art (plus black and white). We discussed that they primary colors are the MOST important because they make ALL of our other colors. We also observed that Piet Mondrian must really love rectangles and squares because that is what he always uses in his artwork. Kindergarten artists first created their own Mondrian pieces of work using crayon. We then cut these out to make an umbrella with a neat Mondrian design on it. Kindergarten artists then added details like a handle and raindrops!
In 1st grade we talked about the "fancy art word," texture! We looked at examples of things with different texture: cactus, kitten, apple, toad, slug, etc. and talked about the differences. We then thought about how we could draw texture. How can we make something look prickly? soft? smooth? We decided to try out texture by painting a dog. We added final touches with paper and glue, also known as collage, another "fancy art word."
This Kindergarten project might be my favorite of the year so far! They all turned out AWESOME. We read one of my favorite books, "Chica Chica Boom Boom" and applied some of the elements in the book to our project, specifically the coconut tree. We discussed the term landscape and what it means and then created our own tropical landscape using oil pastel and watercolor. As a final touch, we added 1 special letter falling out or climbing up our coconut tree, just like in the book!
Happy Valentine's Day...belated! Kindergarten artists created Valentine inspired artwork to give our SCES hallways a festive feel for the month of February. We read a cute story called "Slugs in Love" but decided that slugs would be boring to draw so we changed them to snails so that we could decorate the shells! Our "snails in love" were completed using sharpie marker and watercolor.
Seeing the Northern Lights in on Miss Stahl's bucket list. I thought it would be fun to create a Northern Lights inspired project to get all of us in the winter spirit. We looked at several examples of the Northern Lights and discussed where and why we might see them.
Students then used chalk pastel to create their own version of the Northern Lights. They did not disappoint! So beautiful! Kindergarten artists created a Fall themed art project. Students drew simple pumpkin, sitting on the ground underneath a night sky. The fun part came when we added oil pastel to our pencil lines and finished by painting with watercolor. We discussed how oil pastel and watercolor do not like each other, so they do not bother one another. All of our oil pastel lines stayed perfectly and it was fun to watch our night sky appear when we added the dark watercolor!
It still doesn't fee like fall here at SCES! In fact, it is still quite warm in the Art room when the Kindergarten classes arrive at the end of the day! We decided to do a fun project that would make us think of something cool....ICE CREAM!
Students got a chance to create their own ice cream cone. We talked about different flavors of ice cream and the special cone that ice cream sometimes comes in, a waffle cone! Students then got the chance to paint for the first time this school year using watercolors! We discussed all of the rules that come along with watercolors: give your brush a bath before switching colors, be nice to brush(don't give it a bad hair day), mix your colors on your paper and not in the paint trays...among many others! Kindergarten kicked off the school year with an opening project that explored LINES!
Students talked about different kinds of lines and some were amazed that lines did not have to be straight! Lines come in all different types: wavy, zigzag, curly, etc. We practiced drawing different types of lines and then tracing them with Sharpie marker. When finished, we practiced our very best coloring skills during the first week of school! I hope you all are having a wonderful summer vacation. Hopefully you have found time to create some artwork! Check back in the fall for Kindergarten Art updates!
