1st graders read a story called "Giraffes Can't Dance" and along with that, took a look at pictures of real life giraffes. We talked about all the characteristics of the giraffe. Their favorite was the long, purple tongue...of course! We then discussed the art term portrait. For the final project, 1st grade artists created their own giraffe portrait. Some even chose to include the purple tongue or music notes to go along with our story!
1st grade artists created a fun winter project. We discussed all of the fun activities that you can do when it snows. Then we worked together step by step to create our projects. Students tried to guess along the way, what activity we were drawing. I had most of them fooled for quite awhile. We created someone looking up to the sky and catching snowflakes. Students used oil pastel to color their masterpieces.
1st Grade artists explored texture in their Fall art project. We looked at several examples of Fall leaves and talked about how leaves feel. We drew a large fall leaf on our paper and added lots of texture using lines of different variety. We also discussed what colors we see with Fall leaves and students were encouraged to use those colors in their artwork. We protected our texture lines with crayons and added watercolor as a finishing touch!
First Grade started off the school year with their very own self-portrait.
Students discussed the difference between a self-portrait and portrait and looked at some famous examples by Van Gogh and Picasso! We talked about all the parts of the human face and where they are located. We wanted to make sure we didn't have ears at the top of our head like teddy bears or our nose right between our eyes! Students then created their own self-portrait, adding details that made it truly their own like glasses, freckles, a missing tooth, earrings or a favorite shirt! I hope you all are having a fantastic summer vacation. Find some time to make Art! Check back in the fall for 1st Grade Art updates!
