Students studied the artwork and characteristics of Vincent Van Gogh. We then took a closer look at Van Gogh's famous painting "Sunflowers." We discussed the term still-life and then demonstrated our knowledge of the word by drawing our own. We looked closely at the art term value and students applied this to their project as well to make it seem more realistic. Chalk pastel was used as our media. It can get a little messy but it was worth it. They turned out beautiful!
4th grade explored the world of painting with their parrot project. They were given a brief demonstration on how to draw a parrot. They could choose to follow that demonstration or go in their own direction, whichever they were comfortable with. As for the painting process, they were given no demonstrations except on how to properly manage supplies so that the art room didn't get too messy! I wanted them to explore paint as a media and find out what techniques work for them. It is usually different for every artist!
4th grade artists studied one-point perspective. We looked at several examples and discussed why and when one-point perspective is used! Instead of practicing with the typical room or hallway, we created an aquarium using one point perspective. Students enjoyed utilizing their ChromeBooks to reference how to draw marine life. Aquariums were completed using mixed media.
4th grade students created a piece of artwork inspired by Veteran's Day. We discussed the importance and Veteran's Day and why we celebrate it. Final projects were able to be displayed in the hallways for all of the visiting veterans during the SCES Veteran's Day Celebration, led by music teacher, Mrs. Macke. Thank you veterans!
4th Grade artists studied the term foreshortening. We looked at several examples of foreshortened objects, included objects in nature. 4th grade artists then drew foreshortened birch trees. We applied wet mixed media and only used paint (watercolor and tempera) to finish our fall project!
Ancient Egypt has always been one of my favorite topics so this 4th grade lesson is one of my favorites to teach! There is so much information to share and it's hard to choose what specific topics to cover!
As a class, we talked about the basic Ancient Egyptian things and looked at several examples: the Great Pyramids at Giza, hieroglyphics, and sarcophagus'. The students were eager to learn and willing to share information they previously knew as well. We created our own sarcophagus, either male or female because in Ancient Egypt there was a distinct difference in the way each looked. We practiced writing in hieroglyphics and finally colored our sarcophagus using mixed media (a variety of tools). Happy Summer Vacation! I hope you are finding time to create art! Check back in the fall for 4th grade Art updates!
